TL;DR

A list of "Bits and Bobs" - Things to do, places to go, food to eat..

Onsen

My goto onsen when in Tokyo, big baths, great water and there is a Midori Sushi below, so you can buy, bring and eat…

A little out of the way, but this is such an unique onsen, it's worth the trip, jet black water and lots of quirky little baths. Plus, you can visit the temple nearby and go for Unagi afterwards (see Suzuki below).

Food

Suzuki

Unagi

My favourite Unagi restaurant in Tokyo, but I am biased, the master is my (ex) cousin by marriage! Everything is prepared in front of you, so it takes 2-3 hours to complete your meal, and not cheap but a once in a lifetime experience… make sure to book, it's popular. If you need a topic to talk about, the master is mad about Springsteen and Nagabuchi!

Karaage📍 Roppongi

If you are as crazy about good Karaage as myself you have to give this stand-up bar a whirl, it was my stable when I worked in Roppongi Hills. Lots of different types (flavors) of Karaage, it's a small place and fills up quickly…

Family Days Out

Great for those with kids, it's a pretty big obstacle course, with things to climb over, under and across. Your kids will fall, may get the odd graze, will get dirty, will get wet and above all, will love it! There is a nearby onsen to take them to clean up…

American Camp Village

Kids📍 Okutama

Another one for families, a great little spot in Okutama for "glamping", lots to do for a weekend, fishing, BBQ, obstacle course, hiking, river swimming! Yes, it's up a logging trail and no, you are not lost, keep on going!

Festivals & Gatherings

My local Shrine and worth a visit anytime, it's a pretty large area with a walk through a forest park, plus occasionally you can see Kyudo classes. The festival is quite famous and includes an evening where all the local Omikoshi come into the Shrine and have a "face-off", lots of shouting!

Outside Ireland and the US, Japan has a large number of events across the country celebrating Ireland's National Saint. Tokyo has its own parade, ball and many more events in March.
